Mona, Darling Point, Sydney

Mona was once one of the grand estates of Darling Point and home to a fabulous art collection of old European masters assembled by merchant Thomas Ware Smart and largely originating from the famous Northwick collection. The Smart collection was housed in a purpose-built art gallery behind Mona house which was open to the public on occasions, at a time prior to the existence of a public or state gallery. The Smart collection was sadly dispersed after the death in the early 1880s of Thomas Ware Smart. Mona was leased by architect Thomas Rowe and his family from 1885 until 1905.

Mona house survives at 38 Mona Road, Darling Point, but much altered and extended and in a highly-compromised curtilage.
